Destination Guide

Since its foundations were laid in the 11th century, this former capital of a sprawling empire was a major stop of ancient caravan routes; its location on the crossroads making it a key destination for Europe-bound trade. As reflected today, in its fusion contrast of Africa and Europe, West and East, bohemia and high culture, Arab cities and Berber villages.

Framed by the snow-capped Atlas Mountains, and wrapped in faded red, ochre walls, Marrakech is appropriately known as the “Red City or Al Hamra”. Like many North African and Middle Eastern cities, the town is characterised by both an old fortified city, the Medina, and a newer, modern city called “Gueliz”. The Medina of Marrakech was founded nearly a thousand years ago, within which irrigated gardens and sun-baked walls the colour of terracotta serve to accent its natural beauty of history.
